Revolutionizing Disease Understanding with Multi-Omics Research

Dr. Gary Patti, a renowned expert in metabolomics and key member of the NIH Multi-Omics for Health and Disease Consortium, will discuss the transformative potential of multi-omics research. This NIH consortium advances the generation and analysis of multi-omics data for human health research. As principal investigator of this consortium, Dr. Patti leads a central production center that functions as a hub for multi-omics analyses for materials from consortium members at each of six disease study sites identified by the NIH. Dr. Patti will share insights into how these efforts are revolutionizing disease understanding, with significant implications for ALDA member companies.

Gary J. Patti, PhD, is a leading researcher in the field of metabolomics and the Michael and Tana Powell Professor at Washington University in St. Louis, where he holds appointments in the department of chemistry and the department of medicine. Dr. Patti’s research focuses on developing and applying both mass spectrometry-based and NMR-based metabolomics technologies to enhance our understanding of human health. Dr. Patti is also founder of Panome Bio and has helped advance the field of metabolomics through the development of gold-standard software tools, commercial benchmarking kits, and NIH-led trials.

AI Methods for Linking Multi-Omics Data and Phenotypes

Dr. Russ Altman, a distinguished professor at Stanford University and a pioneer in the field of bioinformatics, will discuss how AI technologies are being used for multi-omics integration such as deep neural networks, transformers, and multi-modal data integration—and how they can be used to extract value from this data. This session will take a close look at which tools are likely to be used—as well as expected pros/cons of performance—to analyze the data. He will also explore AI capabilities for individual omics and how they can be used to integrate multi-omics.

Professor Russ Altman of Stanford University specializes in bioengineering, genetics, medicine, and computer science, focusing on the application of computing and informatics to medicine. His research explores drug actions at various biological levels and the impact of genetic variation on drug response. Altman has received numerous accolades, including the U.S. Presidential Early Career Award, and serves on the NIH Director’s Advisory Committee. He founded the PharmGKB knowledge base and advises pharmacogenomics companies.
